Learn how to get advice and treatment for sexual health and sexually transmitted infections with a virtual appointment.
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), sometimes referred to as sexually transmitted diseases or STDs, are a common health issue that can have serious consequences if left untreated. Treating STIs virtually has become increasingly common in recent years, thanks to the convenience and privacy it offers.
It can be embarrassing or difficult to schedule an in-person appointment for an STI concern. With Rocket Doctor, you can receive care from the comfort of your own home, without having to worry about going to a walk-in clinic. Appointments can be either video, or live-chat, both of which provide a suitable means of communication with the doctor to provide the required information they need to diagnose, offer medical advice and treatment.
So, what STIs can be treated virtually? Some common STIs that can be treated through telemedicine include chlamydia, gonorrhea, and trichomoniasis. These infections can be treated with antibiotics, which can be prescribed through a virtual appointment where medication can be sent to a pharmacy of your choice for collection.
During your virtual appointment, you will discuss your symptoms and medical history, and the doctor will determine the best course of treatment for you. It is important to remember that if you are at risk for one STI, you are at risk for them all. They may also ask for a urine sample or swab to confirm the diagnosis. Based on the history you provide you may be asked to go for blood testing as well.
It is important to note that virtual STI treatment is not appropriate for all infections. Some STIs, such as HIV, require more complex treatment that may not be able to be initiated virtually.
Virtual STI treatment can also be a useful option for individuals who do not have a primary care provider or who do not feel comfortable discussing their sexual health with their regular healthcare provider
It is important to practice safer sex to reduce the risk of contracting an STI. This includes using condoms or dental dams during oral, vaginal, and anal sex and getting tested regularly. If you have multiple sexual partners, it is especially important to get tested regularly and to disclose your STI status to your partners. Do not be hesitant to ask your partner about their STI status and insist they also engage in safer sex practices.
Virtual STI treatment can be a convenient and more comfortable option for individuals. As with any medical treatment, it is important to follow the instructions of your healthcare provider and to seek in-person care if your symptoms do not improve or if you have any concerns.
